Cardiac output is the function of heart rate and stroke volume. It measure amount of blood the heart pumps through the circulatory system in a minute
Cardiac Output Calculation Formula
Cardiac Output (CO) = VO2/ (Ca – Cv)
Ca = (Hgb × 13.4 × O2Sat / 100) + (PaO2 × 0.031)
Cv = (Hgb × 13.4 × O2vSat / 100) + (PvO2 × 0.031)
Where,
- Hgb: serum hemoglobin (g/dL)
- O2Sat: arterial oxygen saturation (percent) measured from arterial blood (%)
- O2vSat: mixed venous oxygen saturation (percent) measured from the pulmonary artery in the absence of a shunt (%)
- PaO2: the arterial oxygen pressure (mmHg)
- PvO2: mixed venous oxygen pressure (mmHg)
Oxygen Consumption (VO2) may be determined by:
- Separate calculation
- Machine measurement
- Estimation/assumption of approximately 250cc/min in a healthy person
