Injury severity score (ISS) is the combination of three most severely injured body regions have their score squared.
ISS Calculation Formula = Body Parts [5]2 + Body Parts [4]2 + Body Parts [3]2
- [ ] value can be changed based on the severity of injury.
For example,
Let score the injury,
- No injury = 0
- Minor injury = 1
- Moderate injury = 2
- Serious injury = 3
- Severe injury = 4
- Critical injury = 5
- Untreatable = 6
Now, if the body parts injury like below statement –
- Head and Neck = minor (1)
- Chest = moderate (2)
- Abdomen = Serious (3)
- Leg = Sever (4)
- External = Moderate (2)
Then the Injury severity score will be = (4)2 + (3)2 + (2)2 = 29 points.
Note: Regional injury scores represent Abbreviated Injury Scale scores (AIS).
