Solid Fraction Calculation Formula

Solid fraction is an important parameter in developing, producing and understanding solid dosage forms. It helps to compare different formulations, to analyze batch-to-batch variations and to understand tablet defects.

A lot of properties of solid dosage forms are directly linked to the solid fraction. And luckily, it is no difficult to calculate.

The solid fraction is the content of solid particles within the apparent volume. It is sometimes also called the relative density.

For a tablet it can be calculated by the tablet density divided by the particle density which is the pore free density.

Orienting values for the solid fraction are for powders and ungranulated material 0.2 - 0.5, for granules 0.5 - 0.7 and for tablets 0.75 – 0.9. In tableting higher solid fractions often provoke tablet defects like capping.
