Dosage Calculations Based on Age

Age of a patient is one of the most important considerations for drug dosage modifications due to some of the important pharmacokinetic parameters change with age. A few general equations for the dosage calculations based on age are provided below.

Drug Dose Calculation Formula for Child

1. Young’s Equation (preferably from one to twelve years of age)

Dose of child = (Age in years × Adult dose) ÷ (Age in years + 12)

2. Cowling’s Equation

Dose of child = (Age in years at next birthday × Adult dose) ÷ 24

3. Fried’s Equation (preferably from birth to one year of age)

Dose of child = (Age in months × Adult dose) ÷ 150
